Malindi City Tour

Malindi is one of the oldest town along the coastal line and one of the favorite spots on Kenya’s coast with attractions split between luxurious hotels and buildings that date back to the 12th century. A bigger town that lies North of Watamu, Malindi boasts of a number of attractions such as Vasco da Gama pillar, Portuguese Chapel, Falconry, Handicraft Center, Marine Park, etc.

Malindi is well known for Italians tourists, once rivaled only by Mombasa for dominance in this part of Africa

The Tour

You will begin the tour with a visit to the great Portuguese historical monument (Vasco da Gama’s pillar), built in 1498. You will then visit the Portuguese chapel – the first Christian church in East Africa built in 1509, to carter for only 60 Portuguese present at the time.

St Francis Xavier, a founding member of Jesus Society visited Malindi in 1542, and buried one of his sea men at the chapel, on his way to India. Also the colonial governor, Mr. J Bell Smith, was buried here.

Tour the Indian shops and later the Italian part of Malindi, before heading to the fruit and vegetable market, mingling with the ever friendly locals, going about their daily lives.
